Last weekend I finally got around to trying Cafe Kino - I have walked past it so many times and have heard so many people singing its praises, yet for some reason I have never got around to eating there. All I can say is that it was well worth the wait. It is a totally vegan little haven (apart from the option to have dairy milk in your coffee), but this is no trendy green juice/salad bar. We are talking delicious spicy bean burgers, generous portions of rosemary baked potato wedges and naughtily big slices of cake. Personally I loved the honesty of it all - no talk of superfoods and special ingredients and you can have a bottle of (organic ginger) beer if you fancy it - it is a bustling and happy place to go and enjoy wholesome, planet-friendly food. If all that isn't enough to persuade you that Cafe Kino is really onto something, then the fact that it is always full definitely will.
The menu isn’t long, but its success lies in its simplicity. All three of us went for Spicy Bean Burgers (which as you can see are long time favourites of mine) with Rosemary Baked Potato Wedges and Salad - green salad with tamari seeds and sun-dried tomatoes.
The bean burgers went down a storm with all three of us... they come with the most amazing spicy salsa, and the crunchy tamari seeds on the salad are yum - I will definitely be trying something similar at home soon. My overall favourite was the Chai Spiced Cake - fluffy sponge covered in deliciously sweet frosting - probably on the less healthy end of the vegan spectrum but I think you risk losing the enjoyment of food if you can't indulge every now and again!
Cafe Kino is well worth a try if you ever find yourself in Stokes Croft. I'll definitely be heading back soon to try some of the other tempting options on the menu.
